Simultaneous or 3+2 — what do your parts actually need?
In 3+2 mode the machine tilts the part into position, locks both rotary axes and mills in three axes. That covers most multi-face work: holes, pockets and faces from several sides without a new setup. It is also the simpler way to program.
Simultaneous machining moves all five axes at once. You need it for free-form surfaces, molds and turbine parts. It also needs the matching software option in the control, and not every 5-axis machine carries it. Check the option list, not only the axis count.
Trunnion table or swivel head — what changes for you?
On a trunnion table the part tilts. That keeps the milling spindle rigid, but table load and clamping surface set the limit. Heavy parts run out of headroom quickly, because the fixture tilts along with the part.
On a swivel head the tool tilts and the part stays put. This suits large and heavy parts, at the cost of some rigidity. Check which design a machine uses before you compare travels. The same travels mean different things on the two designs.
Which control fits your team?
The control decides who can program the machine, not how accurate it is. Mazatrol is conversational and strong at the machine. An operator can write a program on the shop floor without a CAM seat.
Heidenhain and Siemens controls are the norm in mold making and in CAM-driven work. Pick the one your programmers already know. Retraining takes weeks, and those weeks usually cost more than the price gap between two machines. Ask which control generation is fitted, since the generation decides the data interface.
Is a probe worth it on a 5-axis machine?
On five axes, almost always. The probe measures the real position of the part instead of trusting the fixture. It also sets the zero point without a dial indicator, which cuts minutes out of every setup.
Without a probe, every clamping error goes straight into the part. On five axes that error shows up on all machined faces at once. Check whether the probe, the receiver and the control cycles are all included. A probe body alone is of little use.

Which 5-axis machining center fits your parts?
Start with the part, not with the data sheet.
The largest part you plan to run, plus its fixture, sets travels, table size and table load. Next comes the number of faces that must be finished before the part comes off the table. That answer decides between 3+2 and simultaneous work. Only then look at the milling spindle, the tool magazine and the chip conveyor.
Choose them the other way round, and you pay for power the part never asks for.
Frequently asked questions — 5-axis machining centers
What does a used 5-axis machining center cost?
There are no list prices on the used market. Age, control generation and spindle hours set the frame. On top of that come the state of the rotary and tilting axes and the equipment on board. Two machines from the same series can differ a lot in price. Ask us for a written quotation on the machine you are looking at. It lists what is fitted and what we found during the inspection.
What condition are the machines in, and how do you check that?
Every machine goes through our own workshop first. On a 5-axis machine we listen to the milling spindle under load and run the tool magazine through a full tool change. We measure the play in the rotary and tilting axes and move the swivel range from end to end. The control is started with all its options, because a missing option is not visible on the machine. Operating hours are recorded where the control still shows them. Many machines can be seen under power, by appointment.
Do I need simultaneous machining, or is 3+2 enough?
3+2 covers most multi-face parts, and it is easier to staff. Simultaneous work pays off where the tool has to follow a curved surface at a changing angle. It also costs more than the machine alone. You need a CAM seat that writes five-axis paths and a post processor built for that exact machine. Both take time to set up. If you are unsure, we go through your drawings with you before you choose.
Do you handle transport and installation as well?
Yes. We dismantle the machine, transport it, set it in place and commission it, including instruction at the operator panel. Single steps can be booked separately if you have your own people. We confirm the access route, crane requirement, floor space and connections with you before the delivery date, not on it.
Is financing or leasing possible?
Yes. We arrange purchase financing and leasing through our finance partners, lease purchase included. Terms depend on your credit standing, the age of the machine and the size of the investment. That way the machine can start earning before it is paid off. We also take your current machine as a trade-in and offset it against the purchase price.
What if the right 5-axis machining center is not listed?
Then we take over the search. Tell us travels, table load, control, year range and budget. We place the request in our worldwide network. As soon as a suitable machine comes up, we get back to you. You receive the machine data and photos before you decide whether to travel to it.
