What is a horizontal machining center built for?
The HCN is a horizontal machining center: the spindle sits horizontally, the workpiece rides on a pallet above an NC rotary table driven as the B-axis — a workpiece table, not a swiveling milling head. The typical configuration is four-axis (X, Y, Z plus B) for four-sided machining of prismatic parts in one setup, not simultaneous 5-axis. The horizontal spindle lets chips fall freely — the basis for long unmanned runs at high metal-removal rates.
What do you gain from the twin pallet changer?
The core feature of the standard models is the twin pallet changer: while one pallet is being cut, the operator sets up the second — setup time disappears from the machine’s runtime. Pallets locate on tapered cones for rigidity and a repeatable position after every change; combined with the NC rotary table, tombstones can be loaded and several faces machined without re-clamping. The series is automation-ready from the factory.

How do you judge the condition of an HCN?
Mazak uses roller-type linear guides in X, Y and Z — they carry higher loads and damp better than ball-type systems. The X-axis guide mounting surfaces sit at different heights for more rigidity at lower weight and a drive close to the center of gravity, while the highly rigid, ribbed bed keeps positional change across the X and Z travels low. Thermal compensation corrects heat-induced displacement — it says nothing about mechanical wear.

Which pallet size and tool taper do you need?
The models are distinguished mainly by pallet size and tool-taper size; the type number points to the size.

Spindle speed, torque and travels vary considerably across years of manufacture, generations and spindle versions. We record them per machine from the nameplate and state them in the offer instead of quoting blanket figures for the series. The same applies to the MAZATROL generation.
Which HCN size suits which job?
The sizes differ in pallet and tool taper. On suffixes: no suffix means first generation, II the follow-on generation.

Frequently asked questions about the Mazak HCN
How do you inspect the condition of a used Mazak HCN?
Every machine is technically inspected and documented before sale. On an HCN this covers the spindle and guideways, play in the NC rotary table, function and repeatability of the pallet changer including the tapered-cone location, the tool changer, and the coolant, chip and hydraulic systems. Geometry, spindle runout and backlash are measured, not estimated. Year of manufacture, operating hours, control and equipment are recorded from the nameplate and inside the control itself, not taken from sales paperwork. An inspection under power can be arranged by appointment.
Which control is fitted on a used HCN?
That depends on the year of manufacture and is verified individually on every machine — at the nameplate and in the control. Across the series' history, several MAZATROL generations appear: FUSION 640M, MATRIX, MATRIX NEXUS, MATRIX NEXUS 2, SmoothG or SmoothG3, and SmoothAi. All of them support conversational MAZATROL shop-floor programming as well as EIA/ISO G-code, so existing CAM post-processors can usually be kept. We state the control for each machine individually — a blanket model-to-control mapping would simply be wrong on the used market.
What about spare parts for older HCN generations?
The series has been in widespread use across several generations, so the market for wear and spare parts — spindle, tool changer, hydraulics, pallet changer — is well supplied. On machines from early years of manufacture, the more critical items are the electronics boards and displays of the first control generations rather than the mechanics. We assess exactly that point before purchase and, if you wish, take over maintenance after commissioning.
What should I plan for shipping and installation?
A horizontal machining center of this class is heavy and needs more floor space than a comparable vertical machine, because the pallet changer and setup station take extra room. Points to clarify: floor load capacity and foundation, site access and craneage, how far the machine needs to be dismantled for transport, and power and compressed-air supply. A cell like the HCN-5000 II with PALLETECH is taken down and reinstalled as a system, not as a single machine.
