Used Mazak VARIAXIS i700 – 5-Axis Machining Centers with Tilting Rotary Table

The Mazak VARIAXIS i700 — listed by the manufacturer as i-700 — is part of a series Yamazaki Mazak built for complete 5-axis machining of prismatic parts: the milling spindle stays vertical while the workpiece is tilted and rotated in the table. If you are looking for a used Mazak VARIAXIS, TÖRNER has traded 14 machines from this series to date and currently has two in stock: a Mazak VARIAXIS i-700 and a Mazak VARIAXIS i-800, the latter sold as a package with a VC-Primos 400 L (a 3-axis vertical machining center). Every machine is fully inspected and documented before sale, and we ship and install worldwide. TÖRNER is an independent dealer of used machine tools and is not affiliated with Yamazaki Mazak Corporation.

Tilt-Table Kinematics and Frame

Within Mazak’s lineup, VARIAXIS is the tilt-table series, officially listed as a “5-axis Machining Center / Tilt Table”. Mazak writes VARIAXIS i-700; the market spelling i700 means the same machine. The milling spindle is vertical and both rotary axes sit in the table — a layout for compact, dense parts up to the table load limit. For long or heavy workpieces, Mazak builds tilting-head machines such as the VORTEX series.

  • A/C axes — tilt axis A from -120° to +30°, rotary axis C ±360° on the i-500 through i-800 and the 630-5X II
  • Indexing increment — 0.0001° on the i-Series, 0.001° on the predecessor 5X-II generation
  • C-Series — the newer generation implements the tilt axis as a B-axis
  • Trunnion table — supported on both sides; overhang-free full-gantry frame on i-600 to i-1050, different frame design on i-500
  • Linear guides — X, Y and Z run on linear roller guides

Zero-Backlash Drives and Accuracy

The rotary axis drive is what Mazak explicitly points to on the i-, j- and C-Series: roller gear cam drives in both the tilt and rotary axes, designed to eliminate backlash — the deciding factor for contour accuracy in simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths. After transport and reinstallation, MAZA-CHECK lets the 5-axis kinematic alignment be carried out reproducibly. We do not stock the mill-turn T models — their figures simply put the series in context.

  • T suffix (mill-turn) — direct drive on the C-axis turns it into a turning table: i-700T 1,100 rpm, i-800T 800 rpm
  • Ball screw core cooling — temperature-controlled oil circulated through the ball screw cores for long-term accuracy
  • Spindle cooling — temperature-controlled spindle cooling system
  • MAZA-CHECK — measures and compensates rotary-axis positional offset and tilt, auto-determines the A/C centers of rotation

Sizes, Magazines and Automation

The lineup is tiered by table size and work envelope; the i-700 and i-800 are documented in the series brochure. The generous Y travel lets the i-Series change tools without returning the tilt table to its home position. Many VARIAXIS machines were ordered from the factory with a 2-pallet changer, and Mazak also provides for a Multi Pallet Pool and connection to a PALLETECH pallet storage system.

  • i-700 — X 630 / Y 1,100 / Z 600 mm travels, ø700 x 500 mm table, workpieces up to ø850 x 500 mm, 700 kg table load
  • i-700 spindle — 12,000 rpm with No. 40 taper, rapids up to 60 m/min
  • i-800 — X 730 / Y 850 / Z 560 mm, ø800 x 630 mm table, workpieces up to ø1,000 x 375 mm or ø800 x 500 mm, 1,000 kg table load
  • i-800 spindle — 10,000 rpm with No. 50 taper for heavier cutting
  • Tool magazine — 30 pockets standard, optionally 40, 80 or 120 — plus 60 on the i-500

Control Generations at a Glance

On a used machine, the control is the real indicator of age. As a rule of thumb: MATRIX means the 5X-II generation, SmoothX the classic i-Series, SmoothAi the latest series — promoted with AI-assisted thermal compensation, chatter detection and simulation on a digital twin. We check each machine against its nameplate, along with the tool taper: No. 40, BIG-PLUS No. 40, HSK-A63 or No. 50, depending on configuration.

  • MAZATROL FUSION 640M — first 5X generation
  • MATRIX — 500-5X-II and 630-5X-II
  • MATRIX 2 — early i machines
  • SmoothX — i-Series
  • SmoothG / SmoothAi — j-Series, C-Series and i NEO

Model variants

The series at a glance

In our stock and in the wider market, we essentially see four groups. First, the predecessor generation: the VARIAXIS 500-5X-II (400 x 400 mm pallets) and 630-5X II (500 x 500 mm pallets), both with MAZATROL MATRIX and frequently supplied as two-pallet versions; the spellings “630-5X II” and “630-5X-II” refer to the same machine. Magazine size and equipment vary with machine size and configuration. For this generation, the travel and machine-weight figures in the market data sheets in circulation differ considerably — which is why we quote them only from the original data sheet of the specific machine. Second, the compact j-Series (j-500/5X, j-600/5X) as the entry point, with a trunnion table supported on both sides and an optional 2-pallet changer; the /5X suffix marks the simultaneous 5-axis variant as opposed to the pure indexing version. Third, the i-Series as the core line — i-500, i-600, i-700 and i-800 — differentiated by table diameter, table load and No. 40 or No. 50 spindle taper; we do not carry the i-600. Fourth, the more recent C-Series (C-600) with SmoothAi. A note on our current listing “Mazak VARIAXIS i-800 + VC Primos 400L”: the VC-Primos 400 L is not part of the VARIAXIS line but a standalone 3-axis vertical machining center (BT30/BBT30, 12,000 rpm, 600 x 400 mm table) — what is on offer here is a two-machine package.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Mazak VARIAXIS

How do you assess the condition of a used VARIAXIS?

Every machine is technically inspected and documented before sale. On a 5-axis machining center with a tilting rotary table, we focus on the spindle, the rotary axes and the guideways, the condition of the pallet changer and tool magazine, and the alarm and maintenance history stored in the control. Year of manufacture, control version, operating hours, equipment and included accessories are recorded for each machine — for the two VARIAXIS currently in stock, we will send you these details together with the data sheet and photos on request. We actively encourage an inspection under power, ideally with the machine cutting.

Which MAZATROL generation should I look for when buying used?

That depends on how you program and how you want to connect the machine. MAZATROL MATRIX on the 5X-II models is a mature generation with a large installed base. SmoothX on the i-Series adds touchscreen operation, a Windows-based control PC and MTConnect — relevant if the machine is going into a machine data collection system. SmoothAi is found on the latest series. We verify what is actually installed on site: early i machines in particular may still carry MATRIX 2 instead of SmoothX.

What about spare parts and service for older VARIAXIS machines?

Mechanical components such as spindles, ball screws, guideways and changer assemblies are readily available on the market or can be reconditioned. More critical are control-related assemblies of the oldest generations, such as FUSION 640M. That is why we clarify parts availability in concrete terms before the purchase — based on year of manufacture, control generation and the equipment actually installed — rather than making blanket promises. We can also take care of maintenance after handover.

Do you handle shipping, installation and commissioning?

Yes. We organize dismantling, loading, transport, reinstallation, commissioning and maintenance end to end — within Germany, across Europe and overseas. For international buyers, we prepare the export documentation and provide seaworthy sea-freight packaging. When planning for a VARIAXIS, allow early for floor space and foundation, crane lifting points, utility connections and building access; machines with a pallet changer or pallet storage system need additional space for the peripherals. After reinstallation, we recommend recalibrating the rotary axes with MAZA-CHECK.

Is financing available?

Yes. We work with financing and leasing partners specializing in machine tools and will put you in touch; we support the process through to handover. This can also be combined with the purchase or trade-in of your existing machine, so that selling the old machine and sourcing its replacement are handled in a single transaction.

What if the right variant is not available right now?

Then we go and find it. Through our worldwide network, we set up a search with your specifications — machine size, table load, spindle taper, control generation, pallet changer and magazine size — and get back to you as soon as a suitable VARIAXIS comes onto the market. Currently only the i-700 and the i-800 package with the VC-Primos 400 L are in stock; the search service therefore covers all other variants, including the mill-turn models with the T suffix.
